Mother Teresa started the organization Missionaries of Charity, which runs homes and hospices for people suffering from various diseases as well as orphanages, schools, and soup kitchens. As of 2012, Missionaries of Charity consisted of over 4,500 sisters and was active in 133 countries.

Mother Teresa won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and died on Septeber 5, 1997. She is scheduled to be canonized as a saint in fall 2016.
